House Bill to Deport Illegal Immigrants Convicted of Sex Crimes Passes with Bipartisan Support, 158 Democrats Oppose

Kisah Berita 1001 -
In September 2024, the House of Representatives passed a bill aimed at deporting undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of sex crimes.

The bill received unanimous support from Republicans and 51 Democrats, with 158 Democrats voting against it.

The legislation specifically targeted individuals convicted of rape, child molestation, domestic violence, and stalking, ensuring they would not be allowed to remain in the United States.

Critics argued that the bill unfairly "demonized immigrants," but the real question is: How does safeguarding the community from convicted predators not benefit the victims, especially those who have already suffered harm?

Deporting violent criminals is not about spreading fear—it’s about maintaining public safety.

Why would anyone choose to protect individuals who have preyed on women and children?

158 Dems Vote Against Bill to Deport Illegal Immigrants Who Commit Sex Crimes

Over 150 House Democrats voted against a bill that proposed the deportation of illegal immigrants convicted of sexual offenses or conspiracy to commit such crimes. Representative Nancy Mace introduced the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act earlier this year.

The bill passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support on Wednesday. All Republicans present voted in favor, along with 51 Democratic lawmakers. The final vote tally was 266 in favor to 158 against.

Among the Democrats supporting the bill were Reps. Mary Peltola (D-Alaska), Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez (D-Wash.), Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), and Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.). Two of these Democrats are running for higher office—Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) is running for Senate, and Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) is campaigning for governor.

The bill, in addition to deporting immigrants convicted of sex crimes, would also make individuals who admit to or are convicted of domestic violence or sex-related charges inadmissible in the U.S.

This is part of a broader legislative effort by the House GOP to bring attention to issues arising from the ongoing border crisis, which has impacted numerous cities and states across the country.

Before the vote, Rep. Nancy Mace told Fox News Digital that she fully expected Democrats to vote against her bill.

"If you vote against it, you're sexist against women," Mace stated. "We’re talking about illegal immigrants who are committing domestic violence, rape, and murder on women and children—they need to go. They shouldn’t be allowed into our country."

However, Democrats have criticized the bill as xenophobic.

"Here we are again, debating another partisan bill that spreads fear about immigrants instead of working together to address the immigration system," said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, during the bill’s debate.

"I probably shouldn’t be too surprised. Scapegoating immigrants and using domestic violence for political gain seems to be a longstanding tradition for Republicans."

Despite the opposition, some Democratic support has been seen for the GOP’s efforts to spotlight the border crisis. House Republicans previously passed a bill to detain and deport migrants convicted of assaulting law enforcement, with support from 54 Democrats.

Additionally, the GOP-backed Laken Riley Act, named after an Augusta University nursing student allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant, gained support from 37 House Democrats.
